5 IF Tony Tonnaer

Tony Tonnaer is back on Denim Freaks

IF YOU COULD DEVELOP A DENIM LINE FOR A BRAND/COMPANY WHO DOESN’T HAVE ONE YET, WHO WOULD LIKE TO DO THAT FOR?

Patagonia! I think they make such great outdoor product and they are one of the leaders in sustainable products. I love the mix between denim, sportswear and outdoor, which mix we also bring in our Kings of Indigo collections. I think we can really complement each other in product and vision.

IF YOU COULD MAKE YOUR OWN EXCLUSIVE DENIM FABRIC WHAT WOULD YOU INCLUDE IN IT?

I would love to make a 14oz Japanese Selvedge without new cotton in it. Let’s say so a mix between recycled cotton, hem pand recycled paper… in a dark redcast shade.

IF YOU REALLY HAVE TO MENTION YOUR FAVORITE DENIM BRAND BESIDES YOUR OWN?

Kapital since a long time. The make next to simple dry selvedge denim a wide range of the coolest tops and keep reinventing themselves. In denim and apparel.

IF YOU COULD CHANGE ONE THING ABOUT THIS INDUSTRY/MARKET, WHAT WOULD YOU CHANGE?

Something which I try already for 16 years… changing the industry, retailers and consumers to produce and consume quality products in the most sustainable way. The past years things are moving, but mainly factories and consumers. Still room to speed up this change.

IF YOU WERE NOT A “DENIM GUY” WHAT WOULD YOU BE?

I think I would run a small restaurant and cocktail bar. Love to make great quality products, a good atmosphere and make sure people enjoy themselves. True hospitality gives energy in life.
