Combining Californian landscapes and Japanese raw materials, he creates the perfect denim item
Los Angeles, California, the birthplace of the Maestro of denim, the one and only tailor or better a real craftsman who takes measurement, constructs and deconstructs in order to reassemble and create something new. Jean addicted sure know him: he is Matias Sandoval, founder of MATiAS Denim (2006).
The heritage of the land where he was born and grew lives in him, a real genius able to combine his passion for surfing and skating with the true love for natural landscapes people can admire in L.A.
The surfer’s modern style is the primary feature standing out in his creations, more than the culture for beauty from the past, used to reinvent the future. A mix of Japanese raw selvedge, Japanese washed selvedge and canvas work pants are still used for his items, each one named after the streets in his home community of Palos Verdes.
The indigo wash is the same natural color of the Ocean; the khaki color calls to mind Californian beach sands and coastline; the inspiration comes from the waves. A genius for this sector, even mentored by a colleague when it came to vintage Levi’s. A denim maker who wants to surpass himself, always more, searching for the perfect fabrics (he truly loves the Japanese ones) and refined details, but first of all who wants to leave his personal stylish mark.
